It was only about a month ago that I spent 6 hours in the ER, waiting on test results for a friend who'd passed out during our half marathon.
I returned to the ER last night, but this time it was Brandon. He was complaining of chest pains starting Friday. However, I wouldn't necessarily say he was "complaining." He doesn't do much of that. The more serious the illness or injury, the less complaining. I know, its backwards. Anyways, he mentioned his chest pain a few times, but never made a big deal. I tried to pull it out of him, but it was a struggle.
Finally, yesterday afternoon, his mom convinced him to go to the doctor. He ended up in the ER hooked up to a heart monitor and eventually being admitted to the hospital last night. It was a long night.
This is what they found:
1 - chest x-ray: clear
2 - blood work/urinalysis - clear
3- EKG - abnormal
The EKG showed a "blockage" in his conduction system of the heart. In other words, the signal for contraction was not working the way it should. They weren't sure why or what was going on, so they decided to run more tests today.
4- Stress test: cleared
However, they found that his ejection fraction of his heart is low...lower than they like for his age (the capacity at which his heart is pumping).
So what now? He's to see a cardiologist to figure out what to do. Not really sure what the cause is? At least this doctor didn't say. I wasn't a huge fan of this particular doctor today. I asked him if it was a valve problem and he said, it doesn't have anything to do with it. Meaning? They aren't related, because that's false, or that's not his cause? He wasn't very clear.
So anyways, that's what our Tuesday consisted of. His parents came in early this morning, so he will be watched tomorrow while I return to school. Gotta get ready for those SOLs!
I'll keep ya posted on his progress
